The Ministry of Primary Sector, Food Sovereignty and Water Security of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria has celebrated the days 22 y 23 of April, in Infect, the XXXIII Edition of the Official Cheese Contest of Gran Canaria, a consolidated event whose main objective is to value, promote and disseminate the quality of the cheeses produced on the island, promoting local consumption and continuous improvement in production processes.
In this framework, the cheese factory Cardón Era of Luis Martel Perdomo, from Agüimes, has taken the award for Best Cured Cheese from Gran Canaria 2026. This contest, included in the set of Island Cheese Contests, Vino, Honey, Oil and Potatoes from Gran Canaria, The central axis was the blind tasting of the participating cheeses, carried out by a panel of experts with specific training, as well as the choice of Best Cheese from Gran Canaria by a panel made up of representatives of the cheese factories that have submitted their cheeses to the contest.
Parallel to the contest, A commented tasting was also held, aimed at professionals in the sector, where the organoleptic characteristics of the island's cheeses will be explained. The awards ceremony will be held together with the Insular Wine Competition, in mid-October of this year.
In this edition, the best cheeses were awarded in different categories and a total of 31 trophies. The winning cheeses will also be entered in the prestigious international World Cheese Awards competition., where they will represent the cheesemaking excellence of Gran Canaria, which will be held this year in Córdoba, Spain of 12 al 14 of November.
With this contest, The Cabildo of Gran Canaria reaffirms its commitment to the primary sector and to the enhancement of the island's agri-food products, supporting sustainability, knowledge and recognition of the local product, as established in its main objectives of the Strategic Plan for the Primary Sector, such as improving the competitiveness of livestock farms, in this case, and the enhancement of both the sector itself and its products.
