The Government of the Canary Islands rewards the quality of Canarian agri-food products with 123 awards from the Agrocanarias Competitions 2023
The Department of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), has recognized the excellence of the Archipelago's agri-food products with the delivery of a total of 123 awards for the best wines, cheeses, remembered, oils and sea salts from the Islands within the framework of the Official Agrocanarias Competition 2023.
During the ceremony of awarding these distinctions, the area advisor, Narvay Quintero, He referred to the need to dignify the work of the producers of the Archipelago, “giving them the value they deserve as businessmen and women in the primary sector”, which “provides us with food, create landscape, contributes to the fight against erosion and climate change, maintains our rural environment and traditions, and generates employment and economy in our environment”.
“Our products weave the threads of our identity and connect us with wonderful memories; a bite, a sip, they remind us who we are, where we come from and how much we have to be grateful, They are also a link with our history, a tradition that lasts on every table”, pointed out.
The head of the Department also pointed out that “We cannot and do not want to live with our backs to our agriculture and our livestock.; The team in charge of the company works on this. Quintero He concluded his speech by congratulating all the winners in this edition of Agrocanarias and encouraged attendees to toast “for our productions, for those who make it possible for us to enjoy them and because they continue to achieve many successes”.
For your part, the director of Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), Luis Arraez Guadalupe, congratulated the producers, technical staff of the Institute, tasters and tasters, as well as the collaborating companies and administrations in the different competitions “for their work and dedication to promote these initiatives that value and recognize the quality of the
local products”. “In this line, from the ICCA We promote actions to promote the consumption of Canarian productions and raise awareness among buyers of the importance of betting on these productions.”, added.
The ceremony, directed by comedian Kike Pérez and the communicator Caridad Diaz, was attended by the award winners, the management team of the Department of Agriculture and other members of the Canary Islands Government, authorities of regional and local public administrations, representatives of all the island councils, of Agricultural Professional Organizations, Fishermen's Guilds, los Regulatory Councils of the different Protected Designations of Origin of the Archipelago, of companies and associations of the primary sector, and teaching staff and students of the Tacoronte Agrarian Training School, among other attendees.
The best in each category
In this edition of the contest, they have participated 462 productions and have been granted 123 awards, of which 50 correspond to cheeses, 40 to wines, 23 to gofios, five to oils and five to salts.
The distinction of best wine from the Islands in this edition went to Mists of Ayosa Malvasía Aromática, prepared by SAT 9036 Winegrowers of the Güímar Region, of the Güímar Valley DOP (Tenerife). This contest competed 178 samples from producers throughout the Archipelago and were recognized 40 in the different categories.
They participated in the cheese contest 165 productions corresponding to 56 cheese factories of the Islands and they distributed 50 awards. The cheese factory Uga Finca received the distinction of Best Cheese from the Canary Islands, Don Nicolas, aged pasteurized cow's milk, made in the municipality of Yaiza (Lanzarote).
Extra virgin olive oil Hojiblanca-picual Teguerey, prepared by Luis Hernandez Santana was chosen as the best of Canary Islands in this edition, which included the participation of 16 samples, of which five were awarded.
On the other hand, Remembering Gomero of millet, prepared by Rayco Herrera under the Protected Geographical Indication “Remembering Canary” obtained the distinction of best gofio in the Archipelago, among a total of 93 productions from 18 mills of the islands. On this occasion, were granted 23 prizes distributed in 18 medals and 5 distinctions. This mill also received different medals in different categories., the distinction of Best Local Grain Gofio of the contest for this same production, and the one awarded by the jury of older people for their Ideal 5 of wheat, corn, barley, oats and chickpea, also recognized with a Grand Gold Medal.
Besides, the Flower of Salt from Salinas de Tenefé, of Gran Canaria, produced by BRC Hydraulic Infrastructures SL, has been recognized as the Best sea salt from the Canary Islands 2023.Ten samples of salt (five varieties of virgin sea salt and five of fleur de sel) they competed, five of them were awarded.
In each contest, a panel made up of expert tasters, professionals specializing in the analysis of agri-food products, has been in charge of deciding with his evaluations the award-winning productions. The evaluation of the samples is carried out following the blind tasting system (without knowing what productions they are tasting).
During the event, the promotional spot starring the Canarian comedians was screened. Aaron Gomez y Dario Lopez ,which is part of the institutional campaign carried out by the ICCA and the public entity Management of the Rural Environment of the Canary Islands in the media to promote, under the motto “This Christmas we give our best”, the consumption of local products on these dates of celebrations. The musician's performances Manuel Ramos, the singer Fabiola Socas, and the timplist Jose Manuel Benitez they livened up the celebration.
