'Acoge un Plato' returns to Gran Canaria with the Mercado del Puerto

The CEAR gastronomic workshop returns to the Canary Islands to create a space for cultural exchange, awareness and solidarity

TheSpanish Commission for Refugee Assistance (DINNER) brings back to the capital of Gran Canaria its solidarity cooking workshops taught by refugees and applicants for international protection. The appointment will be next30 of November at 18:00h in the Port Market.  

Host a Plate'is the name of this initiative led by DINNER in which kitchen professionals who have been assisted by the entity prepare, together with the participants, a complete menu with traditional recipes from their countries of origin. In these workshops, chefs and assistants have the opportunity to chat, share experiences and learn first-hand about the reality of those who have to leave their countries due to serious threats to their lives.

On this occasionEduardo Goenaga, Cuban applicant for international protection and former user of CEAR Canarias, will be the chef in charge of guiding the participants during the hour and a half that the workshop will last. You will share not only the preparation and ingredients of the dishes, but the customs and memories that accompany each of the recipes. Besides, He will also tell about his time at the entity and his experience in the “PIIIL CEAR COCINA” training and job placement program.

The return to the island of gastronomic and solidarity proposal has been possible thanks to the collaboration with the Port Market. This emblematic building of the capital of Gran Canaria will be the setting where the workshop will take place thanks to the transfer of the space by the market that, besides, will provide the chef with the necessary ingredients to carry out the activity.  

Solidarity workshop 'Flavors of Cuba'

Cuban cuisine, protagonist of the meeting, It is known for its humble and simple recipes but full of flavor. In it, Spanish cuisine is fused, African and indigenous giving rise to a tropical and subsistence gastronomy. With few ingredients like rice, the beans, chicken and pork (and some spices) They manage to create unique and easy-to-prepare dishes..

The menu chosen for this occasion begins with some plantain baskets stuffed with shrimp stew.. As a main dish, the chef will teach us how to prepare “La Chorrera” style rice with chicken., a very popular recipe in Cuba that has its origin in a hotel in Havana. Finally, we will learn how to make a Cuban-style pina colada., a reinterpretation of the famous cocktail in the form of a cold dessert. 'Host a Plate' is an initiative of CEAR (Spanish Commission for Refugee Assistance) which aims to promote the inclusion of refugees through cooking, because gastronomy does not understand borders. In this way, it is possible to involve the community in charitable activities., since they not only provide an opportunity to learn skills, but they also foster collaboration and team spirit.
