The Gran Canaria Wine Route project, that combines music, landscape and wine heritage, is imposed in an edition 140 applications
The wine of Gran Canaria has found in music a different way to tell its story. And that combination just received national recognition. Pairing Gran Canaria, the project promoted by the Gran Canaria Wine Route Association, has obtained the Award for the Best Wine Tourism Initiative in the eighth edition of the Spanish Wine Routes Wine Tourism Awards, organized by the Spanish Association of Wine Cities (ACEVIN).
The award distinguishes a proposal that transcends conventional visits to wineries to explore the relationships between wine, musical creation, the landscape and wine heritage of the island. A way to bring visitors closer to the culture of Gran Canaria wine through experiences that incorporate other artistic disciplines.
The jury has especially valued Maridaje Gran Canaria's ability to develop its own language and transmit the particularities of island viticulture through innovative and accessible formats.. The decision takes on special relevance in an edition that has brought together 140 candidatures from 29 of the 40 Spanish Wine Routes, a record number of participation in these biennial awards.
When wine meets music
Pairing Gran Canaria was born with the intention of exploring new formulas to communicate the island's wine identity. Music has been one of his main expressive vehicles, with the compositions and interpretations of Germán López and Augusto Báez as an essential part of a proposal that also incorporates training activities, professional meetings, pairing experiences and promotional actions.
One of its highlights took place last 27 June in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, where an experience was held that brought together 13 wineries belonging to the Gran Canaria Wine Route. The meeting allowed establishing a dialogue between the island's wines and artistic creation, placing producers and their preparations at the center of the proposal.
The project has had the collaboration of AIDER Gran Canaria, Tourism of Gran Canaria and different areas of the Cabildo, in addition to wineries, establishments attached to the Route and music professionals, gastronomy, design and communication.
A recognition of island viticulture
For Alvaro Gonzalez, manager of the Gran Canaria Wine Route, The award reaches beyond the project itself and recognizes the work carried out by those who are part of the sector.
«This recognition is also for our viticulture, to the challenges it faces and the multiple expressions that make Gran Canaria a unique wine territory», González points out, who highlights the collective nature of the initiative.
The association defends wine tourism as a complementary activity that can open new economic opportunities for wineries., contribute to the conservation of the agricultural landscape and promote a more direct relationship between visitors and those who work the land.
In this sense, González considers that the development of experiences linked to wine can also contribute to diversifying the tourist offer of Gran Canaria, incorporating knowledge of the territory, its producers and its agricultural heritage as part of the visit to the island.
The VIII Spanish Wine Routes Wine Tourism Awards, which are granted every two years and have no financial endowment, recognize business initiatives, professionals and institutions related to the development of wine tourism.
The delivery ceremony will take place next 19 November in the Auditorium of the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum, In Madrid, where Maridaje Gran Canaria will officially receive recognition for the Best Wine Tourism Initiative of this edition.
