Organized one more year by the Ministry of Primary Sector, Food Sovereignty and Water Security of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, This Competition meets the objectives of its strategic plan for the primary sector: valorization of the product and support for an activity that was about to disappear. In recent years, beekeeping has increased exponentially., counting today on around 330 beekeeping farms that total close to 11.000 hives. The Beekeeping School promoted by this Ministry, contributes to ensuring the generational change that keeps this livestock activity alive.

Part of this work has crystallized in the definition of a racial prototype of the Canary Black Bee., recently published and which is the first step to begin the process of recognition as a native species.
New category of honey in competition
This year the contest incorporates a new honey category: monofloral of Berol or Bejeque, as it is known in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Emiliano Fernández from El Hierro, component of the tasting panel and winner of the Best Honey from the Canary Islands award 2024 in the regional competition, believes that the appearance of this type of honey may be due to the fact that water stress due to lack of rain has precipitated the flowering of this plant above other common ones..
As it is a new modality not yet classified, the tasting team faced the challenge of detecting new characteristics., in addition to the first ones already identified: dark amber color, fluid in the mouth, medium and enveloping smell and intensity and fine crystallization.
