He Gofio Gomero of millet, prepared by Rayco Herrera, under the Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) Remembering Canary, has been recognized as the best in the Canary Islands by the tasting panel of the Official Agrocanarias Competition 2024, organized by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Agrifood Quality Canarian Institute (ICCA). This producer has also achieved the distinction of Best Local Grain Gofio for your local millet production, the one awarded by the jury of seniors, for the millet, and that of the children's jury, in this case for his Gofio Gomero with wheat and millet, which also adds a great gold medal.

The Minister of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, Narvay Quintero, and the director of the Agrifood Quality Canarian Institute (ICCA), Luis Arraez Guadalupe, announced today Tuesday, 22 October, the award-winning productions at an event held at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government in Tenerife. He also announced that the Government is working on an initiative to promote the intake of these preparations among children and young people in educational centers based on references from the world of sports., “that we will announce very soon”.

In this edition of the contest, celebrated in La Gomera the days 18 y 19 September, A total of 71 gofios of fourteen mills on the islands and a total of 25 awards: 19 medals (six silver medals, seven golds and six great golds) and six distinctions. During two days of tasting, a panel composed of 16 specialist tasters and tasters selected, through the blind tasting system (without knowing what productions were valued) medals and distinctions.

The lightly roasted millet gofio from Molino San Pedro, produced by José Antonio Hernández Rivero in Gran Canaria, was recognized as Best Gofio Without Salt from the Canary Islands, new distinction in this edition, in addition to winning a gold medal. Besides, The Gofio Mill Machine received the distinction for Best Image and presentation for the preparation of the mixture produced by Alexis García Amaro in Tenerife.

In the wheat-based gofios section, both the Gofio Gomero and Gofio Gomero have been awarded with a large gold medal. (IGP Giofi Canario) by Rayco Herrera as the Gofio Imendi de Espelta Mill (IGP Giofi Canario), prepared by ADRISUL S.L. In this category, the same producers won a gold medal for Molino de Gofio Imendi (IGP Giofi Canario) and Gofio Gomero de Espelta (IGP Giofi Canario). Besides, the Gofio de Agua García Mill, in Tenerife, received a silver medal for his wheat production made by Vidal Hernández.

In the millet category, the Molino de Gofio Buen Lugar S.L stood out. (IGP Giofi Canario) from Gran Canaria, which achieved a gold medal for its intense roasted product and a silver medal for the medium roast (IGP Giofi Canario). Molino de Fuego also won silver in the same section., by Sánchez Bruno S.L., for its medium roast preparation.

As for the gofio made from a mixture of wheat and millet, the production of the Gofio Imendi Mill (IGP Giofi Canario) was recognized with a gold medal while the Molino de Gofio El Sauzal, by Eduardo Afonso, won a silver.

Finally, In the form of gofio made with cereals and/or legumes or their mixtures other than the previous ones, a large gold medal was awarded to La Molina de José María Gil S.L., in Lanzarote, and a gold medal for Imendi 3 Cereals (IGP Giofi Canario). In this category, the producer Rayco Herrera stood out, with a great gold medal for the Gofio Gomero Ideal 5; a gold medal for its wheat production, millet and barley; and two silver, for its production 3 cereals and chickpea, and for the Special 10, all of them under the PGI Gofio Canario.
