Producers interested in participating in the contest, organized by ICCA, They have up to 27 May to formalize registration
The Department of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), has published the Resolution calling for the Official Competition of Agro-Canadian Cheeses 2024, aimed at promoting these island productions, with special attention to those made under the protection of figures of differentiated quality.

The contest, which will be held on the island of Fuerteventura, establishes different categories of cheeses depending on whether they are made with pasteurized milk or raw milk, of different livestock species (goat, vaca, sheep and mix) and in different stages of maturation (tender, semi-cured, cured, old and stale). The type of coagulation is also considered (of vegetable rennet or a mixture of vegetable rennet and others) and maturation due to the development of molds (inside or on the surface).
The rules of the contest determine that natural or legal persons who produce, produce and package any of the types of cheese mentioned above in the archipelago, and that they comply with the current legislation and regulations of the sector. Besides, The productions presented must be available in the markets and correspond to their own commercial brands..
The weight of the sample presented must be equal to or greater than two kilograms, and for those samples that do not reach this weight, As many whole or fractional units will be presented as necessary to reach the minimum required.. They must also be presented in containers that guarantee their correct conservation., allowing the presentation of several samples in the same package as long as they are properly identified and differentiated. The date and place of delivery of the samples will be communicated to each participating cheese factory by email and/or telephone..
The contest will be governed by a blind tasting system, where the tasting panel, made up of about twenty tasters and tasters, specialists in the analysis of agri-food products, will evaluate the samples without knowing their origin. With their evaluations they will determine the productions awarded with the Great Gold Medals, Gold Medals and Silver Medals, as well as the special distinctions of “Best Cheese from the Canary Islands”, “Best Organic Cheese from the Canary Islands”, “Best Limited Production Cheese from the Canary Islands”, “Best Image and Presentation”, “Best Popular Cheese of the Canary Islands”, y “Best Cheese chosen by the Children's Jury”, of 2024.
The chosen product will star in information that will be published on the website of this autonomous organization and sent to various general and specialized media in agricultural information and gastronomy., for dissemination. Besides, The distinguished productions will be able to use the official badge of the award obtained for one year and will participate in the different development and promotion events that the ICCA organizes throughout the year.. In addition, to the cheese factories that have been admitted to this contest, Registration and logistics costs will be paid in the Gourmet Cheese Championship which is celebrated annually in Madrid.
