The contest, promoted by Agrocanarias, is framed in the “II Regional Cider Fair of the Canary Islands”, that will be celebrated on days 18 y 19 of May

The Minister of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, and the mayor of the Valleseco City Council, José Luis Rodríguez Quintana, presented the first edition of Official Agrocanary Cider Competition 2024, that will be celebrated on days 18 y 19 May in the municipality.

During his intervention, The member of the Canary Islands Executive explained that this contest is part of a proposal from the Valleseco City Council that receives the support of the Government of the Canary Islands, through ICCA, “given the importance of the production of this production in Valleseco, which has seen an increase in the number of productions and also their quality in recent years, already recognized in national and international competitions and which also constitutes a booming sector in the archipelago”, in which there are currently around twenty cider producers on the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, The Palm, La Gomera and El Hierro, of which seven are located in this Gran Canaria municipality.

In this sense, The local corporation has promoted the creation of its own quality brand “Valleseco cider” and works together with the sector in the creation of a regional brand “Canary Cider”.

Quintero recognized the work of the Valleseco City Council for the consolidation and promotion of products derived from apples and its leadership to promote the growth of this sector together with the producers. “A work that can serve as a reference for other areas of the islands in relation to a product that contributes to diversifying the agricultural and agri-food production of Canary Islands, as well as to promote sustainable tourism that generates economy in our rural environment.”, added.

The details of the Official Canary Islands Cider Competition

The mayor explained that the contest is part of the celebration of the II Regional Cider Fair of the Canary Islands, that promotes the local corporation, in this edition with the support of the Canarian Government, and which includes, among other activities, a meeting with cider producers from the Canary archipelago, that will take place Saturday, 18 of May, from the 17:00 hours, and that will have the participation of specialists such as the winemaker and master cider maker José Antonio Norniella Sánchez, who will offer a presentation on the process of making this production. Other experts will address different topics of interest such as product labeling standards and subsidies for this sector.. Besides, A round table is planned to be held on the future prospects of this production on the islands., in which cider makers from Asturias, the Basque Country y Tenerife.

On the second day, he domingo 19, at 10:00 hours will take place Official Competition, and of 11:00 a 14:00 hours will develop “II Regional Tasting of Ciders of the Canary Islands”, with three tasting sessions open to the public.

The director of the ICCA, Luis Arraez Guadalupe, indicated that the contest is part of the Official Agrocanarias Competitions with which the Canary Islands Executive, through this autonomous body, annually recognizes the best cheeses, Wines, remembered, extra virgin olive oils, sea ​​salts, “and that constitute a stimulus for the commercialization of these productions”.

The contest will be governed by a blind tasting system, where the tasting panel, made up of tasters, specialists in the analysis of agri-food products, will evaluate the samples without knowing their origin, determining with their evaluations the Great Gold Medals, Gold Medals and Silver Medals, and the special distinctions of “Best cider in the Canary Islands 2024”, “Best organic cider in the Canary Islands 2024”, y “Best Image and Presentation 2024”.
