The island wineries reinforce the prestige of Canarian wine in the 33rd edition of the “Mondial des Vins Extrêmes”
This Tuesday, the Canary Islands once again placed themselves among the great international references of heroic viticulture by receiving 91 awards at the 33rd edition of the “Mondial des Vins Extrêmes”, competition organized by the Research Center, Studies, Protection, Coordination and Valorization of Mountain Viticulture (DEER) and held in September 2025 in the Italian region of Valle d'Aosta, whose awards were presented at La Casa del Vino de El Sauzal
The production of the Islands received 35 more awards than in the previous edition, with a total of 85 medals and six special distinctions, between them 39 big gold medals and the World Extreme Wines Award 2025, awarded to the region with the greatest number of wines presented in this edition and collected by the Minister of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero.
The Minister of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, and the president of CERVIM, Nicola Abbrescia, together with the vice president of the same center, Manuel Capote Pérez, in addition to the mayor of El Sauzal, Mariano Perez, the counselor of the Primary Sector of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Valentín González and the vice-counselor of the Primary Sector of the Government of the Canary Islands, Eduardo Garcia, They presented these distinctions in an event led by Ainhoa Capote. Besides, The Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the autonomous region of Valle d'Aosta also attended as guests., Speranza Girod, and the Secretary General of Agriculture and Fisheries of Madeira, Nuno Maciel.
During his speech, Narvay Quintero highlighted the enormous value of the archipelago's wine culture and pointed out that this new success “is a reflection of the talent, effort and dedication of winegrowers, winemakers and oenologists of the Canary Islands, capable of producing wines of extraordinary quality and personality in a context marked by extreme production conditions resulting from our orography., with rugged and sloping terrain, that require manual labor, also typical of heroic viticulture”.
Precisely, These are some of the aspects that define heroic viticulture, a typology of cultivation conditioned by the difficulty of geographical conditions, as unevenness greater than 30 %, a high altitude or isolated and small areas, Circumstances that make manual labor mandatory. Such is their complexity that these vineyards are rare and represent only a 5 % of the European vineyard.
In the same line, Manuel Capote highlighted the results achieved by the Canarian wineries in this edition and highlighted that “having obtained nearly a third of the almost 300 medals awarded not only represent enormous prestige for the island's production, but it confirms the Canary Islands as an international reference and a model to follow in the field of heroic viticulture”. In addition, underlined the relevance of the special distinctions achieved, with special mention to the “VINOFED Award for the best rated wine of the contest and the World Extreme Wines Award, recognitions that reinforce the projection and leadership of the Canary Islands in this sector”.
