The sixth edition of the Gran Canaria Potato Island Fair 2024, which will be celebrated between the days 18 y 20 of this month in Terror, from the hand of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Terorense City Council, will once again attest that the potatoes that sprout from the Gran Canaria countryside are one of the star products of island and regional agriculture. Not in vain, on the island the 44% of all the potatoes consumed in the Archipelago and the 62% of those that reach the tables of the island population.

This was highlighted this Monday by the president of the Gran Canaria Cabildo, Antonio Morales, who, together with the Primary Sector counselor, Food Sovereignty and Water Security, Miguel Hidalgo, and the mayor of Teror, Sergio Nuez, has announced all the details of this Fair, in which attendees will enjoy exhibitions, contests, tastings, a farmers market, an agro-professional meeting dedicated to the sector and an institutional ceremony to present awards and recognitions.

In his speech, President Morales has stressed that “the promotion of products from the primary sector of Gran Canaria is one of the strategic objectives of this island Government”. Y, in the specific case of the potato, has emphasized that “the help of the Cabildo is very important, both in phytosanitary treatments, as in the field of technology and subsidies, and that has led to young people joining the sector, around which more than 300 families”, has detailed. “This is an activity with economic profitability that, besides, “It contributes to the diversification of the Gran Canaria economy and the strengthening of the primary sector.”.

Exhibitions, contests, market and technical and professional conferences

The municipality of Teror is once again the venue chosen to host the VI Gran Canaria Potato Fair 2024, which includes a natural exhibition of cultivated varieties; transfer of performance test data, varieties and tasting; technical conferences with current product topics; photography contests, of gastronomy and that of 'heavier potatoes', as well as the ceremony to recognize the producers of Gran Canaria, among other events.

More in detail, the Teror auditorium will host on Friday, day 18, of 9:30 a 14:00 hours and in collaboration with 'Campo Magazine', the celebration of the VI Technical Conference on Potatoes, which will include the 1st Agro-professional Meeting of Potato Cultivation in Gran Canaria, in which technicians and island and national producers will analyze the improvements to be implemented, to continue increasing the levels of island food sovereignty with regard to this product.

During that Friday afternoon and on the same stage, the institutional act will be developed, in which the different prizes of the Variety Trial will be awarded, of the XV Insular Potato Contest, from the photography contest, of gastronomy and the 'Heaviest Potato in Gran Canaria', and prominent people in the sector will also be honored.

Also, at this event, The Cabildo of Gran Canaria will formalize its accession to the Association of Potato Producing Towns of Spain, so there will be the presence of the president of the entity, Amador Díaz Penín, potato producer and mayor of Xinzo de Limia, in Galicia.

during the days 18 y 20 October, in the hall of the Teror Auditorium, Exhibitions of machinery and inputs for potato cultivation and 'Papas the potatoes grown in Gran Canaria 2024' will take place., where the largest potatoes on the Island and various varieties of this tuber are displayed.

Finally, on saturday 19, of 10.00 a 18.00 hours, and on sunday 20, of 10.00 a 15.00 hours, An Agricultural Market will be developed in the Plaza de Sintes in the Teroro town, in which around twenty stalls will display local products, where the potato will be very present.
