Seventeen new professionals successfully complete the VII edition of the Sommelier Course at the Canary Islands Wine Campus

The headquarters of the Regulatory Councils of the Denomination of Origin Ycoden Daute Isora and the DOP Canary Islands – Canary Wine, in the municipality of La Guancha (Tenerife), hosted last Monday 4 August the ceremony of awarding diplomas to the seventeen students of the VII class of the Sommelier Course, organized through the Canary Islands Wine Campus.

For more than thirty years, the D.O.. Ycoden Daute Isora —y, since its creation in 2011, the Canary Islands PDO – Canary Wine – have decidedly opted for specialized training as a key tool for improving the wine sector. Among its most notable training initiatives is precisely this Sommelier Course, which has been celebrated uninterruptedly since 2018 and in this edition it has once again consolidated itself as a reference at the regional level.

For more than 275 face-to-face teaching hours, distributed over six months of intensive training, The students have received top-level education from top-class national and international teachers.. Among the speakers are names like Juancho Asenjo, Paco del Castillo, Crazy Javier, Joaquin Galvez, Juan Jesus Mendez, David Seijas, Ivan Monreal, Rasa Strankauskaite, Miguel Ángel Guisado, Joan Casajuana, Zebina Hernandez, José Eugenio Alonso, Zoa Hernandez, Francisco Perez, Guillermina Sanchez, Tanaira Rodriguez, Enrique Flores, Hugo Pérez del Valle, Victor Damian Dorta, Nuria Spain, Abel Lopez, Miguel Febles, Juan Enrique by Luis Bravo and Rodrigo González, among others.

The training program has covered contents in viticulture, oenology, Sensory analysis and wine geography, both from the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain and the main wine regions of the world. Besides, work has been done to identify the functions of the sommelier, knowledge and management of the winery, as well as the professional profile that this role requires. Modules dedicated to complementary products such as oils have also been included., cafés, beers, aguas, cheeses, yeast, vermouths, distillates and pure tobacco, with their corresponding technical tastings.

The diploma ceremony was chaired by José Sosa, president of the D.O. Ycoden Daute Isora; John Jesus Mendez Siverio, Course director and president of the Canary Islands DOP – Canary Wine; and by Juan Carlos Pérez, on behalf of the students.

With the completion of this edition, The objective of training a new generation of highly qualified sommeliers is more than met, able to contribute with their knowledge, passion and professionalism for the development of the Canarian wine sector. These new professionals are called to be ambassadors of our wines, promoting its appreciation both inside and outside the archipelago.

With each promotion, The Canary Islands Wine Campus reinforces its commitment to excellence, specialization and dissemination of wine culture, thus ensuring that the islands' wine legacy is kept alive in expert and enthusiastic hands.
