Wineries that produce DOP wines have up to 18 March to register through the ICCA website

The Department of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), has published the Resolution calling for the Official Agrocanarias Wine Competition 2024 aimed at recognizing the best wine productions with Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) made and bottled in the archipelago.

As explained by the director of the ICCA, Luis Arraez Guadalupe, the pageant, which will be held in Lanzarote of the 17 al 19 April 2024, It has twelve different categories according to the type of grape and the method of production, and has the purpose of promoting these productions, “providing a quality badge to all award-winning wines that offers winemakers support in the marketing of their productions to an increasingly demanding consumer”.

Who can participate?

Young dry whites/barrel-fermented whites can participate in the contest.; young reds/barrel reds; semisecos; semidulces; sweets; sweet malvasias; dry rosés; of liquor; of tea; sparkling; breeding, and reserve.

The productions presented must correspond to qualified batches and commercial brands available on the market., and comply with current legislation and regulations of the sector. Besides, a part of them must be available for marketing at the time of registration.

On the other hand, all wines must correspond to the vintage 2022 o 2023, except for the children, reservations, teas, sweets, of liquor, sparkling wines and sweet malvasias. Within each type and brand, different wines can be presented, as long as the labeling indicates the differences in the preparation. The sample presented must come from a homogeneous lot, whose stocks in the warehouse at the time of registration must meet the requirements established in the bases according to the quantity. These will be delivered to the facilities of the ICCA in the Oenological Station (Bodega Experimental), located in El Boquerón Highway in Valley of War (The Lagoon), before 13:00 hours of the day 3 of April.

The competition will be governed by a blind tasting system, where the tasting panel, made up of twenty tasters, specialists in the analysis of agri-food products, will evaluate the samples without knowing their origin, awarding the Great Gold Medals with their evaluations, Gold Medals and Silver Medals, and the special distinctions of Best Canary Islands Wine, Best wine chosen by Canary Islands winemakers, Best Image and Presentation, and Best Organic Wine of the Canary Islands 2024.

The preliminary phase of the contest will be held on 17 of April, the final 18, and the winemakers' tasting will take place on the day 19. All of them will take place in Lanzarote.

The product chosen as Best Wine of the Canary Islands will star in a report that will be published on the website of the autonomous organization and sent to various general and specialized media in agricultural information and gastronomy., for dissemination. Finally, he ICCA will cover the registration and logistics costs corresponding to participation in the annual contest of the DEER (Research Center, Studies, Protection, Coordination and Valorization of Mountain Viticulture) of those wineries that have been admitted to the Agrocanarias Competition.
