There is an extensive program of activities related to viticulture and enology that will take place until 29 November in Frontera
The Minister of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, and the mayor of La Frontera, Pablo Rodríguez, have presented the initiative “November, wine month” at an event held at Joapira Mountain and in which the Councilor for Local Development also participated, Marcos A. Casañas, and the vice president of the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin Wines of El Hierro, Alejandro Padron.
This action, organized by the La Frontera City Council and the Canary Islands Executive, through the public company Gestión del Medio Rural de Canarias (GMR Canarias), in collaboration with the Regulatory Council of Denomination of Origin of El Hierro (CRDO), the Frontera Field Cooperative, the Chair of Agrotourism and Wine Tourism of the Canary Islands of the Canary Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA) and University of La Laguna (ULL), and the Chamber of Commerce of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, It covers a wide program of activities related to viticulture and enology that will take place from 25 from October to 29 November in the municipality with the aim of promoting the island's wine sector and, especially, of this municipality of El Hierro.
In his opening speech, Pablo Rodríguez highlighted that this event “highlights the local product, the excellence of our wines and the hard work of the winegrowers who make possible the continuity of the culture associated with local wines”. In addition, the mayor thanked “the provision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Canary Islands Government, of the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin and the rest of the collaborating entities and companies, that make possible the extensive program of this event”.
In addition, Narvay Quintero explained how “the existence of centuries-old vines and the know-how of winegrowers, winemakers and oenologists are responsible for the positioning of El Hierro wines, especially in recent years, at the highest level of excellence and are appreciated and awarded internationally”. The counselor also referred to the project to clean up vine varieties to combat diseases in this crop that the Canary Islands Executive is carrying out., and help to compensate farmers for the effects of the drought, which includes the vineyard, and it will be published, as indicated, at the end of the year.
For your part, Alejandro Padrón pointed out that “in this celebration, wines protected under the El Hierro Protected Designation of Origin take center stage, connecting producers, winemakers and consumers around one of the most emblematic traditions of the island”. “It is a key platform to make visible and promote the quality and uniqueness of local wines., highlighting their volcanic origin and the extreme conditions in which they are grown”, he added.
Besides, Marcos A. Casañas highlighted the council's commitment to the continuity of this event focused on praising the municipality's wine culture., as well as the work and knowledge of the land that make up the landscape.
As on previous occasions, the Festival of San Simón in Sabinosa, which will take place this Friday 25 and saturday 26, followed by the popular Tafeña organized by the Cooperativa del Campo de Frontera on 31 October, will be the events that will serve as a prelude to the celebration “November, wine month”.
Posteriorly, from the 4 until the 10 In November the Tapa Route will be held, in addition to other activities such as the introductory wine tasting course of the 5 of November, the day “Cinema and Wine” scheduled for 8 November, or wine tastings, chocolate and cheese scheduled for the days 6 y 26 of November.
The second week of the event will host the forum “Think Tank Agroturismo”, a space for debate to address the challenges facing the sector. This action will start on 11 November and will continue the next day with a talk by the delegation of the Chamber of Commerce in El Hierro.
Tastings will resume on Friday 15 November with the Starlight awareness day “Between glasses and constellations”, followed by the pairing tasting “Magma Wine” which will be held on Saturday 16 in Joapira Mountain. The week will end on Sunday 17 with the “Route through the wineries of Los Llanillos”.
As a final touch to this edition of “November, wine month”, the City Council will inaugurate the day 27 the street “Cayo Armas” in tribute to the figure of the former mayor and first president of the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin of Wines of El Hierro. After holding a talk on oenology scheduled for the 28 November the program of activities will conclude with the presentation of the Contest prizes “Cayo Armas. La Frontera viticulture through photography”.
