‘Wines, Landscape and Sustainability: the keys to responsible wine tourism'is the title of the technical sessions that start this Wednesday in the Agrarian Extension Agency Classroom of the municipality of Saint Brigid. This initiative seeks to position wine tourism as a developing tourism model on the island., integrating cultural and natural aspects, in addition to as a model of economic advancement for the rural environment. All this with a sustainable and responsible prism, giving importance to the cultivation of the vineyard and the production of wines.
They are developed by the wine tourism municipality of Santto Brigida and the Primary Sector Counseling, Food sovereignty and water security of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria in collaboration with the Gran Canaria Wine Route Association, within the 'Santa Brígida con Vinos' program. Also joining the responsible wine tourism initiative are the Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin of Gran Canaria Wines, the ASpanish Association of Spanish Wine Cities (ACEVIN) and the AIsland Agency for Rural Development of Gran Canaria (HELP Gran Canaria).
“The facilities of our Santa Brígida Agrarian Extension Agency host this initiative promoted by the Santa Brígida City Council., “one of the most significant island winegrowing traditions”, stated Miguel Hidalgo, Primary Sector advisor, Food Sovereignty and Water Security of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. Jose Armengol, Councilor for Rural Development of the Santa Brígida City Council, highlighted that “the presence of managers from three Spanish Wine Routes and members of ACEVIN, representing the Routes of Sierra de Francia, Arribes and Bierzo, “underlines the importance of this meeting at the national level”. He thanked the collaboration of the Gran Canaria Wine Route Association and the Primary Sector Department of the Island Council, “whose support is essential for the success of these days”. Armengol concluded that “together, We are promoting the role of vineyard cultivation and wine production as engines of economic development, always respecting the natural and cultural environment”.
Sandra Armas Judge, president of the Gran Canaria Wine Route, highlighted that “the Gran Canaria Wine Route represents a sustainable tourism experience, emphasizing economic development in the rural environment and promoting respect for the environmental value of the landscape generated by the cultivation of grapes”. He added that “the wine tourism initiative is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030, contributing to the achievement of economic progress goals, social and environmental”.
The conferences have the participation of the Sierra de Francia Wine Routes, Arribes and Bierzo, who present their wine tourism experiences. The Wine Routes are selected for their similarities with the Gran Canaria Wine Route, whether by number of partners, production area, work with local varieties, limited number of wineries that can be visited, etc. All of them start from a particular wine-growing territory, and two of them integrate their experiences with the Biosphere Reserve or World Heritage Cultural Landscapes.
