A total of 23 ciders competed and aspire to become the winners of the I Agrocanarias Contest, held in Valleseco

The municipality Valleseco welcomed, the past 19 of May, he The Official Competition of Cider Agrocanarias, a competition organized by Government of the Canary Islands through the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA) with the support of this City Council, in which a total of 23 cider, thirteen from seven cider houses in Gran Canaria, six of three companies Tenerife, three from a single cider house The Palm and one from a producer of The iron.

There are three categories of the contest, that of natural ciders (natural apple must, sidra natural, sidra natural dulce, natural cider with low alcohol content, and natural cider with fruit), which had ten samples; gasified (extract, seca, semi-dry and sweet), with seven, y sparkling (extract, seca, semi-dry and sweet), with six.

The competition was governed by a blind tasting system, according to which the tasting panel, made up of eight tasters, specialists in the analysis of agri-food products, evaluates samples without knowing their origin, determining with their evaluations the Great Gold Medal, the gold and the silver, and the special distinctions of “Best cider in the Canary Islands 2024”, “Best organic cider in the Canary Islands 2024”, y “Best Image and Presentation 2024”.

The director of ICCA, Luis Arraez Guadalupe, He highlighted that it is a booming sector, “who has seen how the number of companies, productions and their quality have experienced great growth in recent years, being recognized in national and international competitions, and recalled that there are currently twenty cider houses in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, The Palm, La Gomera y The iron, of which seven are located in this Gran Canaria municipality, which concentrates the island's production and has led the promotion of these preparations, working for the future creation of the guarantee brand “Valleseco cider”, among other actions.

“This contest arises at the proposal of the local corporation, an initiative that the Canarian Government supports because it considers it very important to continue advancing in the consolidation of crops such as apples because of what they contribute to the mid-range areas.”, added.

The contest is part of the Official Agrocanarias Competitions, with which the Canary Islands Executive, through this autonomous body, annually recognizes and promotes the best cheeses, Wines, remembered, extra virgin olive oils and sea salts from the archipelago.

The minutes of the jury's decision with the award-winning productions will be made public on 3 June in an event that will take place at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government in Las Palmas.

The tasting panel of this I Official Agrocanarias Cider Competition has been made up of José Antonio Norniella, winemaker and cider master; Benito Pecina, cider maker at Sidreria Kudarcon Vasco; Dolores Isabel Armas, inspector of the Inspection Service, Laboratories and Reports of the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality; Sunday Donato, oenologist and manager of Prodel Agrícola; Elisabet Delgado, WSET2, sommelier and higher technician in Viticulture and Oenology; Llucía Fernández Marqués, member of the Astures XXI Foundation and editor of the magazine La Sidra; Manuel Gonzalez Hernandez, head chef at La Tunera; y Patricia Perdomo, consultant specialized in agri-food and catering and master's degree in restaurant research and management from the Basque Culinary Center.
