Canary Oil arbequina-hojiblanca, made by the company Aloe Vera International in Fuerteventura, has been chosen “Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the Canary Islands” in it Official Agrocanarias Competition, whose jury's decision was announced today at an event held in Tenerife. In total ten prizes have been awarded (three special distinctions and seven medals) distributed among some of the 21 elaborations participating in this ninth edition of the contest, organized by the Department of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canary Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), and what happened last 18 y 19 March at the Hotel Jardín Tecina, In La Gomera.
Aloe Vera International, dedicated to the cultivation of aloe vera for thirty years, started producing olive oil a decade ago, that they extract from olives of the Arbequina varieties, hojiblanca and picual from farms owned by them after a cold pressing process to preserve the organoleptic and nutritional properties of the fruit.
During the event, the area advisor, Narvay Quintero, accompanied by the general director of the ICCA, Luis Arraez Guadalupe, He stressed that “it is of utmost importance to have recovered the Official Agrocanarias EVOO Competition after a year of hiatus due to very unfruitful campaigns in this crop due to different meteorological factors.”. “Through this contest we not only seek to highlight the exceptional quality of this production in Canary Islands, but also help consolidate a product that, although it does not have a great tradition in our Islands, has experienced a great boom in recent years, standing out and becoming a benchmark for our agri-food sector and our ability to diversify.”, added.
A total of 21 samples from 12 oil mills Fuerteventura, The Palm, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and El Hierro. Among all of them, the tasting panel, made up of ten experts in analysis of Canarian agri-food products, granted (with their ratings based on a blind tasting system) a total of ten prizes, distributed in three special distinctions and seven medals, after a process that includes the olfactory phase (to assess the intensity of the aromas and fruitiness) and a taste phase, in which the product is presented at a temperature between 28 y 30 degrees to evaluate the harmony of flavors.
My Olivar Refugio del Mar, of The Palm, in its Arbequina variety and made by Manuel Álvarez von Zerboni di Aposetti, achieved special distinction “Best Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the Canary Islands 2026”, category aimed only at products registered in the register of organic production operators (with two participants in this edition), plus a Grand Gold Medal. Besides, Conil Picual Sidewalk, produced by Vereda de Conil Estate, in Lanzarote, achieved the distinction “Best image and presentation 2026”, title for which the labeling and packaging design is exclusively evaluated.
Donkey Safari Las Tirajanas arbequina/picual, prepared by Mateo Juan Martín Vega, in Gran Canaria, won a Grand Gold Medal, while this brand's production of the picual and verdial varieties obtained a Gold. Olipalma multivarietal, of the La Palma Olive Growers Association, y Teguerey arbequina/hojiblanca/picual, by Mohamed Galdi El Aouni (Fuerteventura), They also won a Gold Medal. Finally, Arbequina/picual oleoteide, production of the Cumbres de Abona Cooperative Society (Tenerife), won a Silver.
