Gastrosur brings together the primary and tourism sectors with the importance of local products as a common thread
The seventh edition of Gastrosur has brought together, this thursday, to the primary sector of the south of Tenerife and to business leaders and tourism and restaurant professionals to discuss the role and importance of local products when it comes to offering quality gastronomic services.. The event, co-organized by the Circle of Entrepreneurs and Professionals of the South of Tenerife (CEST) and the Adeje City Council, has focused on the symbiosis between both activities as an economic engine of the Archipelago and has been conceived as a networking space to create lines of joint work and business opportunities thanks to the generation of relationships between the participants..
The day was inaugurated by the president of CEST, Javier Cabrera, and by the mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, who were accompanied by the CEO of GMR Canarias, Juan Antonio Alonso, and the insular director of Foreign Action and Institutional Relations of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Gonzalez.
During the opening, Javier Cabrera highlighted that “in this edition, Gastrosur has expanded geographically, including municipalities like Güímar, which is the first time he participates, and even involving other islands, like La Gomera and La Palma, that have representation at this fair”.
He also focused on the strategic value of the primary sector, “which is going through problems such as the lack of generational change, access to water or the disappearance of crops, but it is perfectly viable if we integrate innovation into it, research and tourism.
For your part, The first mayor of Adeje highlighted the transfer of value between the primary and tourism sectors, which is the basis of this initiative. “Tourism has to add value to agriculture and can benefit, In turn, of the authenticity of the territory”, assured, and added that “there is no good gastronomy, if there is no good product; and there is no good product, if it is not local”.
In this sense, the CEO of GMR Canarias, Juan Antonio Alonso, highlighted that “Gastrosur promotes these much-needed synergies between the primary sector, the commercial and restaurant sector, and with tourism on the island of Tenerife”. In addition, Alonso highlighted “the firm commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands to agricultural and fishing activities through the 'Grow together' strategy., that integrates the kilometer zero product into tourist consumption and reinforces the Canary Islands brand as a quality destination, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and the territory”.
In addition, Pedro González thanked the CEST for having the Tenerife Cabildo in this edition of Gastrosur, “because the vision we have of tourism and the tourism model are aligned”. In this sense, highlighted the ability of the Circle to bring together so many different administrations, demonstrating that “this type of events are necessary and that from different territories there is the conviction that the synergy between the primary sector, “Tourism and restoration is key to the future of these economic activities”.
During the day, representatives of regional public administrations, island and municipal authorities debated with representatives of business associations of tourism and the agricultural sector and with gastronomy professionals about alliances between farmers and restaurateurs, the importance of the landscape generated by crops as a tourist attraction or the reduction of the carbon footprint thanks to local consumption.
In addition, They also touched on topics such as new technologies, the importance of service in the room and the importance of sustainability in the kitchen. Besides, the chefs Eduardo Domínguez (cofounder de Kombuchacho) and Albert Lao (Colmado 1917 Mencey), They gave two masterclasses on fermentation and salting respectively. The final touch to the training part of the event was provided by the considered Best Rum Bartender in the World 2024, Oscar Lafuente, who held a showcooking and cocktail show.
Besides, from noon, Flavors of the Canary Islands offered tastings, and product exhibition in the networking space. The tourist establishments that were able to sample their gastronomic proposals were Gran Meliá Hotel Palacio de Isora, Paradise Park Fun Lifestyle Hotel and Apartments Parque del Sol.
