The Canary Islands triumph at the Mondial de Vins Extremes

The archipelago's productions received 56 medals and five distinctions, among them the best wine and best winery

The wine production of Canary Islands starred in the awards ceremony for the 32nd edition of the “Mondial des Vins Extrêmes 2024”, organized by CERVIM (Research Center, Studies, Protection, Coordination and Valorization of Mountain Viticulture) in the Palazzo Rospigioli de Roma, in which the most outstanding wines and wineries of heroic viticulture have gathered, that is to say, from mountainous regions, steep terrain or small islands.

In addition to hoarding 56 medals (12 big gold medals and 44 gold medals) of the 300 awarded by a jury composed of 50 experts, the archipelago's productions obtained five special distinctions, among them the ‘Premio Mondial Vins Extremes 2024’ that fell on Canary Islands by being the wine region with the highest number of productions participants.

After collecting this award for the archipelago's wine sector at the award ceremony held in the Italian capital, the Minister of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, highlighted that “All these recognitions represent a new success for the Canarian primary sector., whose productions are among the best in the world, but, above all, of winegrowers and winemakers, who are capable of producing and developing exceptional products in conditions of special difficulty, in an exemplary display of heroic viticulture”.

Among more than a thousand wines from 35 countries, with a total of 370 participating wineries, Canarian productions also achieved special distinctions such as ‘Cervim Grand Prix’ for the best wine of the competition, he ‘Cervim Original Award’ for production made with ungrafted vineyards and the ‘Vinofed Award’ best rated dry, three awards that went to the Papaino Volcanic Malvasia 2023 from Bodegas Gavias del Sordo in Fuerteventura (DOP Canary Islands), with a score of 97,33 about 100.

Besides, the Lineage of Payment Winery, in Tenerife, (DOP Canary Islands) was recognized with the ‘Cervim Special Award’ like the most prominent winery in Spain by achieving the highest score as a result of the sum of scores in three different categories.

At the same time, the awards ceremony for the 4th edition of Heroic Distillates, dedicated to spirits of wine origin. In this case, two Canarian preparations won a gold medal: he Güímar Valley White Vermouth 2023, of SAT Winegrowers Region of Guímar-Arafo, and the Grape Pomace Spirits 2021, from Bodegas Insulares Tenerife, standing out as the only two Spanish productions awarded.

In total, Twelve Canarian wines were recognized in the competition with a large gold medal, among them the aforementioned Papaino Volcanic Malvasia, in addition to Malvasía Payment Lineage (2022), from Bodega Linaje del Pago, Conatvs Slimy Black (2023), from Bodegas Conatvs, y Gallo La Exception Syrah (2021), from Bodega Gallo & Quiquere Wines; all of them from the Canary Islands DOP.

They received a large gold medal for wine Young Crater (2023), from Bodegas Crater (DOP Tacoronte Acentejo), he Mists of Ayosa Malvasía Aromática (2023), from the SAT Viticultores Comarca de Güímar – Arafo (Güímar Valley DOP); He Ecological Ancestral Tap 2023 y Moscatel Orange Wine 2022, both from Bodegas El Grifo; Miracle of Magmasia Collection 2022 y Obsidian Light 2022, from Bodega Erupción (PDO Lanzarote); Great Sweet White Salmor 2017 of Campo Frontera Cooperative Society (DOP Wines from El Hierro); y, finally Payments of Fruity White Reverón 2023, from Bodega Reverón (DOP Abona).

Besides, The gold medal winners were Double Malvasía Gallo 2022 y Alejandro Gallo Vijariego Black and Tintilla 12M 2022, both from Bodega Gallo & Quiquere Wine; Abona Listán Negro Black 2023 y Chasnero White Fertilizer 2023, from Bodegas Lacasmi; Off White 2023, Payment Lineage; He Lomo Disparate 2023, The Selected Harvest Loin 2023, He Spine Twelve and One 2021, and the Black Listán Loin 2023, from Bodegas El Lomo; Landscape of the Tenerife Islands 2023, from Bodegas Tajinaste; Red Pago de Los Cercados 2023 y Payment of Los Cercados Albillo Criollo 2023, by Emilio Tomás Palmero García; Dry White Martial Cho Peak 2023, from SAT Viticultores Comarca de Güímar- Arafo; y Brut Blanc de Blancs 2022, from Bodegas Tabares 4, all of them from the Canary Islands DOP.

Besides, among the productions of the Tacoronte-Acentejo DOP were distinguished, with gold medal, the wines Marba Rosado 2022 y Barrica white sea, from Bodegas Marba; Lineage of Traditional Payment y Carmine Red 2022, from Bodega Linaje del Pago; Crater Breeding, from Bodegas Crater; Viña Norte Red Traditional 2023, Broad Marmajuelo on Lías 2023, Viña Norte Blanco Seco 2023, from Bodegas Insulares Tenerife, Hacienda de Acentejo Listán Negro 2023 y Serventia 2023, from Hacienda de Acentejo Winery; y Jable 2023, from Guayonje Winery.
