“Uncorking the Canary Islands” gathered about half a thousand people in the different wineries, confirming the growing interest in the archipelago's wines
The Canary Islands Protected Designation of Origin – Canary Wine held the second edition of its open days every Saturday in June “Uncorking the Canary Islands”, that took place on the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
Ten wineries assigned to this denomination welcomed numerous visitors, allowing them to get up close and personal with the rich history, the uniqueness of the Canary vineyards and the qualities that make Canary Wine unique wines in the world.
The participating wineries were: Viñátigo Wineries, Fluid Stone, The Loin, The Site, Ferrera, Zanata Vineyard, Lineage of the Pago and Monk in Tenerife; Finca Escudero in Gran Canaria; and Conatvs in Fuerteventura. They all started their days with a guided tour of the vineyards, where attendees were able to appreciate first-hand the particularities of vine cultivation on the islands.
Posteriorly, Visitors took a tour of the winery facilities, driven by their own owners, managers and winemakers. There they discovered the process of transforming grapes into wine, sharing not only technical knowledge, but also the passion of those who dedicate their lives to this profession.
The most anticipated moment was, as usual, wine tasting, in which each winery presented their creations, carefully paired to enhance the unique qualities of Canary Wine.
Besides, Each day included a complementary cultural activity: from live concerts to painting workshops or solar observation sessions, thus achieving a perfect fusion between wine, culture and landscape.
Successful participation and positive evaluation
With more than 500 assistants, this second edition of “Uncorking the Canary Islands” has been, in the words of Juan Jesús Méndez Siverio, president of the Canary Islands DOP – Canary Wine and owner of Bodegas Viñátigo, “a resounding success”.
“Descorcha Canarias are open days in which the public can see inside the wineries and get closer to both the vineyards and the people behind them., giving a face to those of us who make and work in the archipelago's wine sector. This is a proposal that links gastronomy and culture with art, which at the end of the day is the same as wine”, Mendez stated..
All participating wineries agree that they value the initiative very positively., highlighting its ability to turn the visitor into a prescriber of the benefits of Canarian wine and an ally of the sector.
“Uncorking the Canary Islands” highlights the firm commitment of the Canary Islands – Canary Wine DOP to the development and visibility of the archipelago's wine sector. Thanks to the joint work of winegrowers who preserve traditional vines in centuries-old vineyards, and the application of modern and sustainable cultivation techniques, exceptional raw material is obtained. This combination makes Canarian wines a unique and internationally recognized product..
