EU–Mercosur Agreement: "a strategic opportunity for the internationalization of Canarian wine"
The Association of Viticultors and Wineries of the Canary Islands (AVIBO) has positively assessed the entry into force, it is 1 of May, of the provisional application of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, after more than 25 years of negotiations, considering that it represents a relevant opportunity to reinforce the international presence of Canarian wines in markets with great growth potential and close cultural ties with Spain..
AVIBO highlights that this new commercial stage comes at a particularly important time for the wine sector., marked by the need to diversify markets, expand the consumer base and strengthen foreign competitiveness in the face of the evolution of consumption in traditional destinations and the current international context.
The Canary Islands wineries already maintain an export presence in different Latin American countries such as Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico, markets where Canarian wine has been consolidating in recent years an image linked to the uniqueness of its native varietals, its volcanic origin and its Atlantic identity.
In this context, AVIBO considers that the entry into force of the agreement with Mercosur can open new commercial possibilities, especially in countries like Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, members of the South American bloc and markets where interest in wines with identity is growing, origin and uniqueness.
The association also remembers that Brazil is currently among the countries in the world with the greatest growth in wine consumption., becoming one of the most dynamic and strategic markets for the European wine sector. The agreement will allow progress towards a more favorable trade framework through the progressive reduction of tariffs and the elimination of certain technical and administrative barriers that until now made access to these markets difficult..
Among the main benefits contemplated in the agreement, the progressive elimination of import tariffs stands out. 18% in Brazil and 35% in Argentina for European wine, a particularly relevant measure to facilitate the foreign competitiveness of Spanish wineries and improve their possibilities of establishing themselves in these destinations..
AVIBO also emphasizes that internationalization currently constitutes one of the great strategic lines for many Canarian wineries., especially in a scenario where wines linked to the territory, sustainability, authenticity and minority varieties arouse increasing interest among international consumers.
The association considers that the Canary Islands have differential elements of great value within the international wine panorama., both for the uniqueness of its pre-phylloxera varieties and for the growing weight of wine tourism and the external projection achieved by the appellations of origin of the archipelago in recent years..
AVIBO considers that this new commercial scenario can contribute to strengthening the international presence of Canary Islands wines in Latin America., opening new opportunities for the archipelago's wineries and favoring the external positioning of a sector increasingly oriented towards differentiation, origin and added value.
