Two other cheeses from the islands, Tender Smoked from El Faro, Lanzarote, and Semi-cured Paprika, of the Select, Fuerteventura, They have achieved third places
The 37th edition of Salón Gourmets has already left the first winners in the 14th GourmetQuesos, the Championship of the Best Cheeses of Spain 2024. In this contest, the most recognized in the cheese sector in our country, have participated 880 cheeses. After a first selection held in March – in which aspects such as the bark were considered, the color, the texture, the smell, the flavor, the aftertaste and persistence of each of the samples–, only the 100 best rated, five cheeses for each of the 20 categories, have reached this final stage.
The panel, formed by 40 judges (63 in the semi-final), has recognized the best and awarded a first, second and third prize in each category. All the finalists will be present during the Gourmets Hall in the Cheese Tunnel, an exclusive space designed to taste them first-hand.
So, Don Nicolás cheese, from the Uga Estate, in Lanzarote, has obtained the first prize among the Cured Cow cheeses, category 2 of the contest. It has been imposed on Haro cheeses, in Rioja and Mourelo, in Lugo. It so happens that Don Nicolás is the current best cheese in the Canary Islands in the official Agrocanarias contest. 2023.
Two other cheeses from the islands have obtained distinction. The Tender Smoked from El Faro, also in Lanzarote, has obtained third prize among the smoked ones. For its part, the semi-cured paprika Selectum, from Fuerteventura, equal position in category7, semi-cured mixture.
However, No Canarian cheese will compete for the absolute best in Spain. On Thursday the finalists will be revealed, what are they:
