Familia Torres advances in its decarbonization objective and reduces the 40% your carbon footprint in 2024
Torres Family manages to reduce the 40% CO2 emissions per bottle in full reach, From the vineyard to the consumer, in 2024 Regarding 2008, year in which the winery first measured its carbon footprint. According to the audited balance of the 2024 (corresponding to Miguel Torres S.A.), This reduction is even more significant - and touches 60% - if direct emissions are considered only (scope 1 y 2) And it is an important step on the road to decarbonization.
From 2008, with the implementation of its climate action plan Torres & Earth, Familia Torres has invested more than 23 million euros in adaptation measures, emissions reduction actions, water management and reforestation, among others. For 2040, has set the goal of being a net zero emissions winery, Therefore, a significant part of the investment has been allocated to reducing its carbon footprint., prioritizing projects related to the self-generation of renewable energy – the Penedès winery generates more than 50% of energy thanks to photovoltaic panels and the biomass boiler – and the promotion of sustainable mobility, with the use of hybrid and electric vehicles and a solar electric train in its visitor center.
Among the most innovative solutions that the winery has implemented to reduce its emissions in recent years, highlight the capture and reuse of CO₂ generated during wine fermentation thanks to a pioneering system implemented in 2021; a water regeneration plant in the winery, in operation since 2016, which allows the reuse of about half of the purified process water, and the implementation of regenerative viticulture in more than half of its 1.000 ecological hectares in Catalonia, a practice that improves soil quality, the resilience of the vineyard and its capacity to absorb atmospheric CO2.
Aware of the urgency of acting against the climate crisis, Torres Family has intensified its efforts, championing the transformation of the wine sector towards a more sustainable model. The winery has gone from 30% al 40% reducing its CO2 emissions in just 5 years, which is a significant achievement. According to Miguel A. Torres, president of Familia Torres: “We can't stop, We must continue working with determination and with our sights set on the ambitious goal that we have set for the future.. The urgent need to act against the climate crisis requires responsibility from us, commitment and working collaboratively. “I am convinced that wine can become a symbol of resilience in the fight against climate change.”
New initiatives from Familia Torres to 2025
Familia Torres continues to advance its decarbonization goal with new initiatives that seek to especially reduce emissions that come from its suppliers (range 3), since these represent close to the 90% of the winery's carbon footprint. So, plans to reduce emissions associated with transportation by promoting the use of trains for the distribution of its wines in Europe and further reducing the weight of the bottles by using the lightest wine bottle on the market, that weighs 300 grams, for some of their wines – the 99% of the wine bottles he uses are already considered light (under 420 grams).
Regarding direct emissions (range 1 y 2), This year, the winery will install lithium batteries in its Penedès visitor center to move closer to energy self-sufficiency and will continue to extend regenerative viticulture to the rest of its vineyards in Catalonia and plant trees to offset part of its emissions with its own resources.. In addition, will participate in research projects that seek to scientifically validate more sustainable solutions in vineyards and wineries, such as the SOLARWINE agrovoltaic project or the VITIBOSC agroforestry project.
