Daniel Martinez, Tatemado chef, won the taco championship in Madrid with PGI Aguacate de Canarias sponsored by the ICCA

The chef Daniel Martinez, from the restaurant Tatemado from Madrid, rose with him first prize of the mexican tacos championship Tacomania, held within the framework of the Gourmets Salon 2026 at IFEMA Madrid. He second place it was for Salvador Melgar, of the CIFP Santa María de Guía, in an event that made the Canarian avocado the protagonist of one of the novelties of the contest.

The contest, promoted within the institutional presence of the Canary Islands at the fair and sponsored by ICCA, sought to reward the best taco made with PGI Avocado from the Canary Islands as main ingredient. The format focused on creativity, the technique, he flavor and the speed of execution, with the aim of projecting the gastronomic potential of this product in a top-level professional showcase.

Before the competition, two presentations were held focused on the value of PGI registration and the differential qualities of the Canarian avocado, organized by the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality and the managing body of the IGP. Afterwards, six professional chefs selected for this first edition of the championship entered the fray., with proposals designed to reinterpret the Mexican taco from the local Canarian product.

In addition to gastronomic recognition, the contest distributed 1.500 euros for the winner y 1.000 euros for second place, along with diplomas and gifts for the finalists. Beyond the record, Tacomanía left a clear conclusion at the Gourmets Hall: he Canary avocado, protected by the IGP since 2025, continues to gain ground as a value-added ingredient inside and outside the Archipelago.
