Agrocanarias recognizes ex aequo Pico Cho Marcial Tinto and Flor de Chasna Dulce in an edition with 251 wines and 71 awards
This year, Canarian wine has two names at the top: Red Martial Cho Peak y Naturally Sweet White Chasna Flower. Both preparations have been chosen Best Wine of the Canary Islands 2026 from the same in the Official Agrocanarias Wine Competition, organized by the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality, attached to the Department of Agriculture, Cattle raising, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The decision of the contest was announced by counselor Narvay Quintero and the director of the ICCA, Luis Arraez Guadalupe, after an edition held between El Hierro and Tenerife in which they participated 251 wines of 65 bodegas, 24 more than last year. The contest has distributed 71 recognitions, between them 33 Great Gold Medals, 33 Gold Medals and five special distinctions.
The highest distinction has gone to two Tenerife projects with very different profiles, but united by the same idea: wine as an expression of the territory. Red Martial Cho Peak, prepared by the SAT Viticultores de la Comarca de Güímar under the PDO Canary Islands, represents high altitude viticulture, of effort and landscape. The winery, founded in 1989 by fifteen winegrowers, belongs today to 152 families and works vineyards located up to 1.500 meters of altitude, on terraces that are difficult to access, non-machinable and, in some cases, no irrigation.
The award-winning wine stands out for its red color with violet tones, its varietal aromas with fruity memories and a marked balance between fine tannins, alcohol and acidity. It is made with very ripe grapes, macerated for ten days, and remains in the bottle for three months to reach its best aromatic and gustatory expression..
The other main protagonist is Naturally Sweet White Chasna Flower, of the Cumbres de Abona Cooperative Society, protected by the PDO Abona. The cooperative, active from 1988, brings together more than 700 winegrowing partners and works in a territory marked by the subtropical climate, the hours of sunshine and the influence of the trade winds. Its naturally sweet wine has an intense yellow color with golden reflections., honeyed aromas, jammy notes of ripe grapes and minerals, plus a soft texture, unctuous and concentrated, fruit of overripe grapes.
Agrocanarias 2026 It has had representation from ten of the eleven Protected Designations of Origin of the Archipelago. By number of recognitions, the DOP Abona led the list of winners with twenty awards, followed by the Canary Islands PDO, with seventeen. They also won Valle de Güímar awards, The Palm, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Lanzarote, The iron, Gran Canaria, La Orotava Valley and La Gomera.
Among the special distinctions, Tagalguen, by Juan Jesús Pérez Adrián, in the La Palma DOP, was chosen Best Organic Wine of the Canary Islands. White Mist on Lees, from the SAT Viticulturists of the Güímar Region, obtained the recognition of Best Wine chosen by Winemakers. Besides, he Gallo Rojo Premium Vermouth, of rooster & Quíquere Wines, received the distinction of Best Vermouth Production in the Canary Islands, one of the most notable novelties of this edition.
Lanzarote also had a presence in the list of winners, with five recognitions for its DOP. These include the Grand Gold Medal for Martinón Blanco, from Bodegas Martinón, and for Timanfaya Malvasia Sweet Natural, from Bodegas Timanfaya, in addition to Gold Medals for Florida, Tear of Malvasía Volcánica y Fruity Martinón.
Beyond the award-winning names, Agrocanarias once again confirms the moment of maturity of the islands' wine. Soil diversity, altitudes, varieties, climates and cultivation methods allow us to speak of an increasingly solid wine map, recognizable and competitive. A map where wine not only adds medals: also generates landscape, rural economy, identity and future.
