Canarian cider took a key step in Tenerife with the first sector forum, that proposed creating a PGI to protect its origin and quality
The canarian cider begins to chart a common path towards its own quality brand. He The Foro Canario de la Sidra, held at the Casa del Vino de Tenerife, laid the foundations to explore the creation of a Protected Geographical Indication, una figura que permitiría reconocer, protect and promote the uniqueness of this product made in the Islands.
The meeting served as the closing of the interterritorial cooperation project Atlantic roots, which closed its activities with a balance considered historic for the primary sector. For two days, producers, Institutions and entities linked to rural development analyzed the needs of the sector and the possibilities of moving towards a unique quality brand for the Canary Islands..
The counselor of the Primary Sector of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Valentín González, defended that a possible IGP would be “the tool that would allow the sector to make a qualitative leap”, by guaranteeing the consumer the uniqueness of a cider that comes from the land and the biodiversity of the Archipelago.
González also stressed that Canarian cider has proven to have exceptional quality., endorsed by national and international awards. In this sense, pointed out the commitment of the Cabildo of Tenerife with the producers, both in improving marketing and in protecting origin.
The forum was promoted by GAR Tenerife, together with the rural action groups of Gran Canaria, La Palma and El Hierro, with the participation of AIDER, ADER and GALP. The initiative also had the support of the Primary Sector Department of the Cabildo of Tenerife, the Tenerife Rural Foundation and the Government of the Canary Islands, through the ICCA y GMR Canarias.
The first day began with the constitution of a working group between producers and administrations, in which the main demands of the sector were addressed. The second turned the Casa del Vino into a meeting point for Atlantic cider, with the presence of producers of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, The Palm, El Hierro and Madeira.
Around 200 people participated in the planned activities, which included valuation workshops, Canarian cheese and cider tastings, mixology and cocktail proposals, as well as pairings with local chocolates and ciders.
The event made it possible to make visible the potential of cider made in the Canary Islands as a product linked to the landscape, to apple cultivation, to biodiversity and the work of small producers. It also opened a way of collaboration between islands to strengthen their presence in the market and build a common story around their origin..
With this first forum, Canarian cider takes an important step towards its consolidation as a differentiated product within the pantry of the Archipelago. The possible creation of an IGP would mark a decisive advance to professionalize the sector, improve its positioning and reinforce its gastronomic value inside and outside the Canary Islands.
